The Future
Thade and Lokust try to win over Pendragon and make him see the new order for the good things it does, which there are many. But is sacrificing freedom for safety ever justifiable?
If you’ve enjoyed the comic so far, I post upcoming designs and sketches over on my Patreon page. Soon I’ll be uploading the previous issues in PDF format onto there. So why not help the creation of VANGUARD and throw a few quid/bucks into the pot?

To answer your question. For me NO. But, what do I know.
Those who would sacrifice freedom for safety will have, and deserve, neither.
Still true. Always true. Hayek broke down the exact mechanisms decades ago, but the T:DR is that people are policy, and the people that approach selects for are not just inherently flawed but PREFERENTIALLY flawed. That is to say, the brokenness is a positive asset and so the selection compounds itself.
the spin a good spiel, but it’s all bullshit.
What we see here is an ends justifies the means argument. Its real easy to take this stance when you get to visit the means upon someone else so that you can enjoy the beneficial ends. Most people change their minds when the roles reverse.
An argument can be made that if you trade a permanent freedom for a permanent safety the trade can be equitable. A law mandates that fences must be built to prevent public access to land with government utilities. This prevents me from accessing said land which is a loss of freedom but also prevents people from tampering with things they shouldn’t or walking unknowingly into danger.
The problem occurs on the bigger things like who gets to run your country. If you give away control to a single person or group can you ever be sure they won’t turn out to be corrupt and use their position for their own gain and to your detriment? Once they have your freedom maybe they won’t deliver on their end of the bargain. Maintaining the freedom of change is the only guard against such things.
“But is sacrificing freedom for safety ever justifiable?”
We want to tell ourselves its not, of course, but realistically… well, those who believe it is absolutely never justifiable all end up dead.
EVERY significant people on the planet (numbers-wise) has a significant portion of the genetics that came from slaves. That is, people who chose to give up their freedom in return for the safety of not being executed.
Example in the negative: there were Germanic tribes that crashed against the Romans, being pushed forward by different groups. When the men died in combat against the Roman legions, the women killed the children and then themselves. THAT is what the end game for “*never* sacrifice freedom for safety”. It does work… but you’re all dead.
I think the proper point is quite far (much safety sacrificed for freedom), but the points exists… if you actually want to have your children survive.
That’s the real world, no matter how much we hate it.
