End of Issue 22!

VANGUARD issue 23… the final issue of the comic!
This is going to be a big, nay, massive issue, maybe double sized. It’ll start updating end of this year… first, VYPER issue 03!
Vanguard will be on hiatus for a couple of months whilst I get the new issue ready. If you’ve enjoyed the comic so far, I post upcoming designs and sketches over on my Patreon page. You can read all the previous issues in PDF format on there. So why not help the creation of VANGUARD and throw a few quid/bucks into the pot? It all helps keep this comic going.

I think I may need help with this line-up. That’s Jordana/Wolfshead out in front, obviously. What I’m coming up with, going left to right is:
Wight Wytch, Malachi, and Luke, no problems so far (Malachi is looking more feral, and Luke’s gotten some armor, but both still very recognizeable).
I’m pretty sure that’s Guy next to Malachi (he looks more like a ginger version of Vaughn than his old self, but after last issue, that makes sense to me).
The problem I’m having is that the only names I’m coming up with for the last three are of people we saw die last issue.
The giant mecha in the back was Cates’s, but he was gunned down by the Major and her troops after she disabled all his wares.
The woman in the ninja get-up looks like Xian/Quirn, but Thade killed her.
And the rifle and hood guy reads as Vaughn, but Violet tore his head off. Second guess would be Cates, but he’s both dead and already in this line-up.
“Xian/Quirn” – she was already avenging her own murder, more or less, right? Something something inherited memory/spirit thingy something something? This could easily be the next family member in line, or whatever made that work. Looks a bit taller, among other things.
Cates – that’s definitely his transformer car hardware. It was also implied that Cates was already dead before, too, or at least, had given up what made him human. Full upload/AI running the remnants of human body for cover/something else?
Rifle guy… yeah, no clue on that one. Cates would be the closest (though still a smidge off), but as you said, that seems EXTRA unlikely, and he wouldn’t pass as Vaughn for several reasons, even leaving out that Vaughn is definitely dead.
Considering the fact that they largely got stomped last time, why does she think this one will go so much better? I mean, sure, Malachi and the White Wych seem to be effectively immortal, but that only keeps them from ending up dead – Malachi in particular seems pretty vulnerable to “and AWAY you go!”, like last time, and even Luke doesn’t seem to be able to actually challenge Max, though he had just finished with Tin Man last time, so maybe…?
The cast page at the start of this issue listed all of Cates, Quirn, and Vaughan as “DEAD” in no uncertain terms. Now, Cates having uploaded himself to his mech could be a possibility without contradicting that, but unless the comic was out-and-out lying to us about the status of the other two (which would be a pretty dodgy move), they’re out of the running.
I suppose the other two mystery figures could be associates of the 2-UIDS that we’re about to meet next issue? (Nothing like an 11th-hour new character introduction or two.)
The rifle-wielder actually looks a bit like Revok from Section 9, in the way-back time of the single-digit issue numbers.
So, did Cates manage to upload himself to a fully mech-body? That would be very cool. And maybe Quirn has some kind of serial-immortality? It is her, isn’t it? Please let it be her LOL – she needs the revenge!! Another nice issue, Dan, looking forward to the final (?) chapter!
Come back and play Urban Dead with us, Dan! 🙂
