V23 – Pg03
‘Splash Page’
Back in the cave of Woden. Think of this place as a location out of time and space. A place controlled by the being we know as Herne. Although his motives seem clear at times, he is one who’s intensions are always shrouded in doubt and mystery.
On the previous pages, a commentor asked: Why couldn’t she make her own portal?
If you’re referring to Kema, she’s still in training under Woden’s tutelage. If you’re referring to Jordana/The Wolfshead, it’s not in her power set. In the lore I have planned out, Herne has three types of agent at his disposal. The druids, the wights and finally, his avatar, The Wolfshead.
The druids, like Woden, can talk to a create/manipulate plant life, as well as control the elements to a limited degree. They are also able to create the leaf portals. Woden, with what’s left of him being severely drained, is limited in this abilities. Ever since he was fatally wounded in the battle of Downing Street, what remains of his life force is from what Herne gives him to ‘live’, or whatever state he exists in now.
The wights are ghost like entities, like Nara, the Wight Wytch.
The Wolfshead is a one of a kind. Only one avatar of this kind can exist at one time. Another avatar of one of these god like characters is Malachi, who is the avatar of the ‘Dark Mother’.
I hope that clears it up!
If you’ve enjoyed the comic so far, I post upcoming designs and sketches over on my Patreon page.
All the previous issues are on there in PDF format, as well a VYPER and a whole bunch of other goodies. So why not help the creation of VANGUARD and throw a few quid/bucks into the pot?
It all helps keep this comic going!

Nice work again, Dan; I do like large pages of art. You seem to be implying that Woden may not last out the series, which is a shame, but I can appreciate your “Herne Lore” and he has had a good run over the years. Now I’m looking forward to seeing how Luke has progressed since his last encounter with Max…
