Two more pages before the end of the issue and things are getting intense. I’ll be taking a little break between issues to catch up on uploading VANGAURD back issues onto Comixology as well as working on the script to the next issue with Gary.

In other news, I’ll be appearing on a weekly podcast, starting from next week. Will post full details on Friday. I AM VERY EXCITE.

The Calm

I know the weather is stormy but this is still the calm before the storm. One final peaceful moment before all hell breaks loose. Poor Kena, she really should have taken a minute to enjoy her fairy cake.

Just Desserts

I call this page just desserts because it features just desserts. And also, eventually everyone gets their just desserts. Jordana’s dad is MIA but at least there are snacks.

You may or may not have noticed, but I’ve been going back and making covers for the older issues and setting up some ‘Previously In VANGUARD’ pages, to help readers keep on top of the story. As well as this, I’ve been trying to format the comics so that they can be uploaded to Comixology. Issue one is live and two and three are currently being reviewed by the staff at Comixology. I’m hoping they’ll be given the thumbs up soon.

Bread and Circuses

I’m also reminded of the scene in History of the World Part I when they tell Mel Brooks, “Sir, the peasants are revolting!” and he replies, “You said it. They stink on ice!” Well, the Romans kept the peace by handing out free wheat to the poor and providing other delights and distractions. We’ll see if this works out for them. Looks like Jordana’s dad is not distracted. In fact, he seems eerily focused.

Page 35?! This issue is turning into a beast. It does need the time though to set up the new world that the characters now inhabit. I think there’s about four or five more pages to go of this one.

Ah Lord de Tonnere and his brood have arrived at the settlement to “rap” with his “peeps”. One of the advantages of being old, out of touch, and uncool is I find the Lord incredibly easy for me to write. So, anyways Lord de Tonnere has just stopped by to smooth everything out and he’s brought presents! (they’re on the next page) I think things are going really well so far.

You have been watching, “Watching Watching Ginny”

Yes, just when you thought Vi and her sister could not be any more horrible, you find out that they are reality TV stars on the top TV show in Britain, “Watching Ginny”. The second most popular TV show in Britain? “Watching Watching Ginny”, a show about watching, “Watching Ginny”. I like to say it’s like the Kardashian TV show, only about awful people. Everything is coming to a head as we race towards the end of Book 10 so hang on and enjoy the ride.

Girls Will Be Girls and Guy will be a panda.

Well Guy seems to be getting along okay in his new job. Beats prison, I think. Keep in mind that while we know something absolutely terrible happened to Vi’s last assistant, as far as Guy knows she’s just a spoiled little brat who was never told she couldn’t play ball in the house.

Kids Say The Darndest Things, or Daddy Issues Part II

Poor Vi. Yes, Violet “Queenie” de Tonnere, she really has the toughest life doesn’t she? It’s hard to be part of the 1% there are so many problems that the rest of us don’t have to deal with. When she’s not screaming directly at her father she likes to lament about having, “nothing to wear”, or that there is, “nothing to do”. With so much pain in her own life it’s no wonder she has no compassion left for the other 99% of the world, right? But ever resourceful, Vi is not above making her own fun as you’ll see on the next page.

We call this page Daddy Issues. 

So, we finally meet Jordana’s dad and he’s… okay I’m not going to say who her dad is but if you’ve been reading the comic for any length of time you probably already guessed. Don’t read the comments if you don’t want to know. But you should go back and read the older issues as they are awesome. 

When you read the training sequence imagine it is an awesome training montage from an 80’s movie. I went looking for the training sequence of Rocky III on YouTube because I remembered loving it. And of course it features, “Eye of the Tiger” the greatest training sequence song of all time. But after watching it I realized my favorite training sequence was actually Mr. T. as Clubber Lang from the same film. I found a clip it seemed very short. But you can go on YouTube and search for Mr T – Rocky 3 training. But after you go back and read all of the previous issues of Vanguard.

‘The enormous advantages of digital comics; or Maybe Maddie suffers from Benjamin Button disease?

So Dan and I collaborate on Vanguard but we both tend to get busy with other things. So sometimes Dan is looking at the script while he draws it and sometimes I don’t get a chance to look at roughs before he posts it. So imagine my surprise when Jordana’s older sister Madison shows up looking like a 12 year old instead of 23. A lot of thought went into how old Maddie was supposed to be and what it meant to the story. So we had to think about what it would mean if she was now younger than Jordana.

In the end Dan decided he would just bite the bullet and redraw her. It makes my job which is already easier than Dan’s, much easier. And that’s why it’s nice to be able to repost a page rather than go from comicbook shop to comicbook shop with a pen and a rubber. (rubber means eraser in UK or so I’m told).

I went back and amended the page (via Photoshop). Now Maddie looks a little more like the age she should be 😉
